Andre Norton , właściwie Alice Mary Norton (1912-2005), to jedna z najbardziej zasłużonych dla popularyzacji fantastyki amerykańskiej autorek. Pisała książki dla dzieci, młodzieży, fundowała nagrody literackie dla młodych pisarzy, wspomagała wiele autorek, podpisując wraz z nimi ich utwory. Pseudonim przybrała w wyniku nacisku agenta, w czasach gdy debiutowała science fiction była domeną mężczyzn. Pisała też pod pseudonimami: Andrew North, Allen Weston, Andre Alice Norton.

Talent pisarski objawiła już w szkole średniej, w Collingwood High School w Cleveland, gdzie pod opieką nauczycielki literatury prowadziła strony literackie gazety szkolnej. Już w czasach szkolnych napisała swoją pierwszą książkę. Po ukończeniu szkoły średniej, kontynuowała naukę w Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University. Chciała zostać nauczycielką historii. Zmuszona brakiem pieniędzy, podjęła pracę, a następnie studia wieczorowe (dziennikarstwo i literatura) w Cleveland College na wydziale dla dorosłych. Potem przez 18 lat pracowała jako asystent bibliotekarza w dziecięcej sekcji Nottingham Branch Library w Cleveland. W latach 1940-1941 pracowała jako bibliotekarka w nadzwyczajnym wydziale katalogów Biblioteki Kongresowej. W listopadzie 1966 przeniosła się do Winter Park, na Florydzie, gdzie mieszkała do 1997. Pod koniec życia przeniosła się do Murfreesboro, niedaleko Nashville, gdzie otworzyła "High Hallack" - bibliotekę dla pisarzy fantastyki.

Andre Norton ma na swym koncie ponad sto książek. To nie tylko fantastyka, są w jej dorobku książki okultystyczne, przygodowe, detektywistyczne, historyczne i szpiegowskie. Jako pierwsza kobieta otrzymała Nebula Grand Master Award (1983).

W Polsce autorka jest bardzo dobrze znana, w ostatnich dwóch dekadach XX wieku opublikowano ponad 90 jej książek.
