Anthony Burgess (właściwie John Anthony Burgess Wilson) (1917 - 1993) – brytyjski pisarz, jego najbardziej znane dzieło to Mechaniczna pomarańcza.

Miał trudne dzieciństwo – matka i siostra zmarły na hiszpankę. W Manchesterze ukończył studia anglistyczne, po czym odbył 5 lat służby wojskowej (do 1946). Pracował jako nauczyciel angielskiego, był pracownikiem Ministerstwa Oświaty, wykładowcą literatury angielskiej na uniwersytecie w Birmingham, przez krótszy czas również w Leningradzie, Tangerze, Marrakeszu, na Teneryfie, również kilkakrotnie jako profesor przebywał w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

Niezbyt szczęśliwe małżeństwo z Walijką Llewelą (Lynne) Jones znalazło swoje odbicie w Trylogii malajskiej (1956-1959 Czas na Tygrysa, Wróg w pościeli, Łoża na Wschodzie). W 1961 po powrocie z Malezji Burgess zaczął cierpieć na zaburzenia psychiczne, okazało się, że ma raka mózgu i nie dawano mu wielu szans na przeżycie. Przeżył, jednak w 1968 zmarła jego żona Llewela, wkrótce potem pisarz na stałe opuścił Anglię. Jeszcze w 1968 Burgess ożenił się po raz drugi z włoską hrabianką Lilianą Macellari; to małżeństwo pozwoliło Burgessowi rozwinąć skrzydła i żyć pełnią życia. Zmarł na raka płuc.
