Richard Matheson (ur. 20 lutego 1926 w Allendale, New Jersey) – amerykański pisarz science fictioon, fantasy i horrorów, autor mający wielki wpływ na twórców zwłaszcza tego ostatniego gatunku. Jeden z nielicznych pisarzy SF, którym udało się zrobić w Hollywood prawdziwą karierę jako autor scenariuszy.

Urodził się w Allendale w New Jersey jako dziecko norweskich imigrantów. Dorastał w Brooklynie, w 1943 roku został wyrzucony ze szkoły. Wstąpił do wojska i uczestniczył w drugiej wojnie światowej jako żołnierz piechoty. Troje z jego czworga dzieci także zostało pisarzami. Jego najbardziej znanym dziełem jest debiutancka powieść Jestem legendą, na podstawie której powstał film z Willem Smithem w roli głównej. Wcześniej film zekranizowano jako Omega Man w 1972 roku, z Hustonem w roli głównej. Na 2012 rok planowana jest ponowna ekranizacja jego innego dzieła − The Shrinking Man, sfilmowanego po raz pierwszy w 1957 roku.

Bardzo często publikował swoje opowiadania w "Playboyu", najczęściej nie była to fantastyka. Najbardziej znani autorzy horrorów, jak Nancy A. Collins, Joe Hill i wielu innych, oddało hołd Mathesonowi za inspiracje antologią Jest legendą.
