Josh Malerman jest amerykańskim autorem powieści i opowiadań. Przed opublikowaniem swojej debiutanckiej powieści Bird Box w ECCO/HarperCollins napisał czternaście powieści, nigdy nie sprzedając żadnej z nich.
Jako piosenkarz i autor tekstów zespołu rockowego z Detroit The High Strung , Malerman koncertował w kraju przez sześć lat, ponieważ zespół grał średnio 250 koncertów rocznie, a wiele szkiców tych powieści pisał na siedzeniu pasażera między miastami w trasie. Tak mówi o tamtych dniach: „Nigdy nie widziałem książek z dolarami w oczach. To nie było hobby, to na pewno, to była prawdziwa rzecz i zawsze tak było, ale byłem wtedy szczęśliwy, po prostu pisząc, i chociaż ślepo zakładałem, że pewnego dnia zostaną opublikowane, nie miałem pojęcia, jak coś takiego się wydarzyło”.
W miarę jak stos szkiców rósł, rosły również pytania o to, co zamierzał z nimi zrobić. Malerman często mówi, że długo żył w „chwalebnym złudzeniu”, w którym brał udział w wywiadach widmowych, udawał, że ma agenta, dyskutował z fikcyjnymi redaktorami i umieszczał na półkach niewidzialne książki w twardej oprawie.
