Lavie Tidhar przebywał w Dar Es Salaam w dniu zamachu na ambasadę amerykańską w 1998 roku. W Nairobi mieszkał w tym samym hotelu, w którym zatrzymali się członkowie Al Kaidy. Od tamtej pory wraz z żoną o mały włos uniknęli śmierci w zamachach londyńskim (2005) i na Synaju (2004) - te doświadczenia nakłoniły autora do napisania najpierw opowiadania "My Travels with Al-Qaeda" (Moje podróże z Al Kaidą) a następnie do stworzenia przełomowej, rozgrywającej się w alternatywnej historii powieści Osama.

W 2013 roku odwiedził Polskę, był gościem Polconu.
