Jack Sharey Urodził się 6 maja 1931 roku w Chicago, w stanie Illinois. Zaczął pisać w wieku 10 lat. Studiował kreatywne pisanie, a potem sam uczył w szkole w latach 1953-1955. W połowie 1955 roku Sharkey zaciągnął się do wojska. Służył w bazie w Nowym Meksyku, gdzie pisał i reżyserował spektakle dla służących w wojsku mężczyzn. W 1958 roku wyjechał do Nowego Jorku, aby rozpocząć karierę niezależnego pisarza. Pisał opowiadania, powieści science fiction, humorystyczne artykuły oraz powieści kryminalne. W 1961 r. powrócił do Chicago, gdzie pracował jako redaktor magazynu Playboy. W latach 1964-75 był redaktorem magazynu Allstate Insurance Company.

Sharkey napisał swoją pierwszą sztukę komediową w 1965 roku. Od końca 1975 roku zajął się wyłącznie pisaniem sztuk teatralnych, co kontynuował aż do śmierci. Opublikował 83 sztuki pod własnym nazwiskiem oraz pod pseudonimami – Ricka Abbota, Monka Ferrisa, Marka Chandlera i Mike'a Johnsona. Jako Mike Johnson pisał thrillery. Wszystkie jego pozostałe sztuki to komedie i musicale. Jego sztuki wystawiane są na całym świecie. Sharkey zmarł na raka 28 września 1992 roku.
