Frank Herbert, właściwie Franklin Patrick Herbert, Jr. (ur. 8 października 1920 w Tacoma, w stanie Washington, zm. 11 lutego 1986 w Madison w stanie Wisconsin) to jeden z ważniejszych przedstawicieli amerykańskiej literatury science-fiction. Zdobywca nagród Nebula (1965) i Hugo (1966) już za drugą opublikowaną książkę (Diuna), pokazuje nam w swych powieściach nie tylko fantastyczne światy, ale zmusza do myślenia, do spojrzenia na życie z innej perspektywy. Twórczość Herberta określana jest jako hard science fiction i łączy zagadnienia z zakresu ekologii, filozofii, teologii, psychologii i ekonomii. Herbert koncentruje się na naturze człowieka, na jego możliwościach i niebezpieczeństwach, które mu grożą ze strony wymykającej się spod kontroli techniki, systemów totalitarnych i narkotyków zmieniających stan świadomości. Inspirowały go religie: buddyzm, którego był wyznawcą, a także islam. Pisarstwo Herberta bardziej skupia się na przyszłości samego człowieka niż tworzonych przez niego technologii.

Syn Franka Patricka Herberta Sr. i Eileen (McCarthy) Herbert, początkowo uczęszczał do liceum Lincolna w Tacoma. Po ucieczce z domu w 1938 i zamieszkaniu z wujostwem w Salem w stanie Oregon, ukończył liceum North Salem. W 1939 roku skłamał na temat swojego wieku, by dostać pierwszą pracę w gazecie Glendale Star. Wcześniej już miał styczność z dziennikarstwem, pisując do licealnej gazetki Lincoln News. W 1940 zaczął pracę dla gazety Oregon Statesman, obejmując po kolei różne stanowiska, był nawet fotografem. W czasie II Wojny Światowej służył przez 6 miesięcy jako fotograf w jednostce pomocniczej marynarki wojennej USA. W tym czasie – w 1941 roku – poślubił w San Pedro Florę Parkinson. 16 lutego 1942 urodziła im się córka – Penny (aktualnie Penelope Merritt). W 1945 roku żona zażądała rozwodu. Po wojnie uczęszczał na Uniwersytet w Seattle, gdzie w 1946 roku poznał Beverly Ann Stuart na zajęciach z kreatywnego pisania. Byli oni jedynymi studentami, którym udało się opublikować swoje prace. Frank sprzedał 2 opowiadania przygodowe do Esquire i Doc Savage, a Beverly publikowała w magazynie Modern Romances. Frank miał jeszcze jeden ciekawy epizod związany z pierwszą publikacją. Otóż w 1937, w wieku 17 lat udało mu się sprzedać do jednego z tygodników wydawnictwa Street & Smith opowiadanie z gatunku western. Zrobił to pod pseudonimem, którego do końca życia nie ujawnił. Ślub z Beverly odbył się w Seattle 20 czerwca 1946 r. Z tego związku Frank miał 2 synów – Briana Patricka Herberta (ur. 29.06.1947) i Bruce’a Calvina Herberta (ur. 26.06.1951, zm. 15.06.1993). Wraz z żoną przeprowadził się w 1949 r. do Kalifornii i zaczął pracę w Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Tu zaprzyjaźnił się z parą psychologów Ralphem i Irene Slattery. Oni to wprowadzili go w systemy filozoficzne Freuda, Junga, Jaspersa i Heideggera, co miało głęboki wpływ na jego przyszłą twórczość. Wtedy też miał styczność z buddyzmem zen. Frank nie ukończył Uniwersytetu, ponieważ uczęszczał tylko na te zajęcia, które go interesowały. Wrócił do pracy dla gazet i był reporterem oraz edytorem dla Seattle Star, Oregon Statesman (powtórnie), a także przez 10 lat dla magazynu San Francisco Examiner’s California Living.

Jego pierwsze opowiadanie (sygnowane własnym nazwiskiem) nie należało do gatunku SF, a ukazało się w magazynie Esquire w 1945 r. W prasie fantastyczno-naukowej zaczął publikować od 1952 (w Startling Stories), nie odnosząc wielkich sukcesów. Zaistniał dopiero w 1956 po wydaniu powieści Dragon in the Sea, która została określona jako "fantastyczno-naukowy kryminał ze skomplikowanym śledztwem psychologicznym". Następną powieścią była Diuna. Początkowo drukowana w czasopiśmie Analog Science Fact and Fiction w latach 1963-65, wydania książkowego doczekała się w 1965 roku, zdobywając uznanie czytelników i krytyków. Zachęcony olbrzymim sukcesem, Frank Herbert stworzył całą serię powieści – Kroniki Diuny, których akcja rozgrywała się głównie na pustynnej planecie Arrakis. Kroniki Diuny są najbardziej poczytną i, zdaniem wielu krytyków, najlepiej opracowaną serią książek fantastyczno-naukowych na świecie.

W 1972 Frank przestał pisywać dla gazet i poświęcił się w pełni tworzeniu powieści. W latach 70. i pierwszej połowie lat 80. odnosił jako autor duże sukcesy. Czas swój dzielił między domami w Port Townsend w stanie Washington i na Hawajach. W tym pierwszym rozwijał pokazowy projekt ekologiczny, starając się by jego domostwo było samowystarczalne w jak największym zakresie. W wielu jego powieściach z tamtego okresu można było odnaleźć ekologiczne odniesienia i filozoficzne idee. Odmiana fortuny została niestety przyćmiona tragedią. W 1974 r. Beverly przeszła operację na raka. Zabieg się udał, ale zastosowanie pewnej metody badań wpłynęło na rozwinięcie się kolejnej choroby, która pozwoliła jej żyć jeszcze tylko przez 10 lat. Beverly zmarła 7 lutego 1984 r. W tym samym roku Frank wydał Heretyków Diuny. Także w grudniu tego roku miała premierę adaptacji Diuny wg Davida Lyncha. Mimo ogromnego budżetu, świetnej obsady aktorskiej i wysokich oczekiwań, film otrzymał chłodne recenzje w USA. Okazał się jednak sukcesem wśród widowni i krytyków w Europie i Japonii. Po śmierci Beverly, Frank ożenił się po raz trzeci, ze swoją asystentką Theresą Shackelford w 1985 r. W tym roku również opublikował Kapitularz Diuny, spajający wiele wątków sagi. To było jego ostatnie pojedyncze dzieło wydane za życia. Zmarł na skutek zatorowości płucnej podczas rekonwalescencji po operacji na raka trzustki 11 lutego 1986 roku.

Śmierć Herberta przerwała cykl Diuny, jednak autor pozostawił ogromną ilość materiałów i szkic kolejnej powieści, rozwijającej wątki rozpoczęte w tomie piątym i szóstym. Na kontynuację pracy nad sagą zdecydował się jego syn Brian Herbert, który wspólnie z Kevinem J. Andersonem od 1999 r. nieprzerwanie tworzy nowe powieści cyklu.
