Matthew Phipps Shiel urodził się w Indiach Zachodnich w rodzinie o korzeniach irlandzkich. Następnie studiował języki i medycynę w Londynie, zanim w 1895 roku ukazała się jego pierwsza książka PRINCE ZALESKI. Następnie napisał ponad trzydzieści powieści, w tym takie klasyczne dzieła jak THE LORD OF THE SEA, THE YELLOW DANGER, HOW THE OLD WOMAN GOT HOME i jego arcydzieło science fiction, THE PURPLE CLOUD.
