Colin Henry Wilson urodził się i wychował w Leicester, w Anglii, w Wielkiej Brytanii. Opuścił szkołę w wieku 16 lat, pracował w fabrykach i wykonywał różne zawody, a w wolnym czasie czytał. Kiedy Wilson miał 24 lata, wydawnictwo Gollancz opublikowało książkę The Outsider (1956), która analizuje rolę społecznego "outsidera" w przełomowych dziełach różnych kluczowych postaci literatury i kultury. Należą do nich Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, Hermann Hesse, Fiodor Dostojewski, William James, T.E. Lawrence, Vaslav Nijinsky i Vincent Van Gogh, a Wilson omawia swoje postrzeganie alienacji społecznej w ich twórczości. Książka była bestsellerem i pomogła spopularyzować egzystencjalizm w Wielkiej Brytanii. Krytyczne pochwały okazały się jednak krótkotrwałe i wkrótce Wilson został poddany szerokiej krytyce.
